Nems is proud to announce the following alumni who were recently recognized by the IWLCA for their excellence in the classroom during the 2008-2009 academic year. These students were nominated by their colleges and are at least in junior standing. Those considered had a GPA of at least 3.5. There were a total of 407 student-athletes at 152 institutions. Syracuse's Dove and Gibson Earn 2008 Big East Honors Syracuse sophomore midfielder, Christina Dove, and senior defender, Christina Gibson, helped the nationally ranked Syracuse Orange (#5) women's lacrosse team win a second straight Big East Championship on Sunday, April 27 at Notre Dame University. Syracuse beat Rutgers (22-7) in the semi-final game and then beat Georgetown (12-6) in the championship game to claim back to back titles. Both Dove and Gibson made the 2008 Big East All-Tournament team and each set individual Big East Tournament records. Dove broke the single-game scoring record by scoring 7 goals in a game and Gibson broke the tournament 'caused-turnover' record with 5 caused turnovers in the tournament. Dove is part of Syracuse's high powered offense that leads the country with 19 goals per game. She tied for a team lead of 66 goals and is second in points with 84 points. Her 66 goals are ranked first in the Big East and 6th nationally, earning her Big East First Team honors. Gibson earned Big East Second Team accolades by anchoring the seventh ranked defense in the country with a team-leading 29 caused turnovers and 27 ground balls. Her 29 caused turnovers are tied for second in the Big East. Syracuse finished the season with a school record of 16-2, going undefeated in the Big East regular season and tournament play and has gained an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. The 5th ranked Orange will find out its tournament assignment on Monday, May 5 when the NCAA announces the 2008 bracket. UMBC's Ali Levendusky, Maggie Chizmar Earn All Conference Honors. Ali Levendusky Named America East Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week UMBC senior attack Ali Levendusky (NEMS 04) was named America East Women's Lacrosse Player of the week for the week ending March 2. The award is the third of Levendusky's career and the first for a Retriever this season. She led the Retrievers to a perfect 2-0 week with a team-best 10 goals and 10 points, and she added five ground balls and five draw controls. She scored four goals against Loyola on Tuesday, including the game winner with 5:17 remaining in the game and the score tied, to lead the Retrievers to an 11-10 victory, their first over the Greyhounds in 34 years. Levendusky has scored at least three goals in each this season for a team-best total of 16, and she is riding an 11-game goal streak that dates to April 4, 2007. Read more... Thursday, February 21, 2008 2008 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Preview: No. 4 Syracuse Check out NEMS Alumni Christina Dove and Christina Gibson Rowan, Quillinan and Dove Named to Inside Lacrosse's Preseason All-America Team Tuesday, October 23 NEMS Alumni Amanda Barnes Takes the Cage for the 'Heels (OCT '07) NEMS Alumni Amanda Barnes (senior at the University of North Carolina) had a great showing at Princeton this past weekend to conclude UNC's fall season! She split time in the goal against four top teams - Princeton, Northwestern, Syracuse and University of Penn. Look for Amanda to play strong this season with a very talented UNC team - good luck Amanda! Thursday, October 11 Six NEMS Alum Square Off in Fall Classic! The NEMS alumni had a very strong showing at the Fall Lacrosse Classic at Centreville High School (Va.) this past weekend (Oct 7) where two top-ten teams, Syracuse University and James Madison University squared off for a fall exhibition game. JMU featured four NEMS alumni (Lauren Bradley-18, Kim Griffin-21, Brooke Rhodey-20, and Emily Haller-7) while Syracuse featured two alumni (Christina Gibson-14 and Christina Dove-12). All NEMS alumni played significant roles for their respective teams and continue to show the lacrosse community the talent level that our NEMS program delivers! Here is a small photo gallery of our NEMS alumni from the game: http://www.flickr.com/photos/10158791@N04/sets/72157602320296588/ Friday, June 8 Christina Dove, one of Four Orange Women Honored by WomensLacrosse.com Dove set an SU freshman record with 58 points and finished just behind Quillinan in the race for goals with 47. Dove’s 58 points are the third-highest total in school history, while her 47 goals are tied for the fourth-most in the program’s history. In addition, she led the team with 50 draw controls, the second-highest total in school history. Against Cornell, Dove set a school record with 11 draw controls. Dove and Quillinan teamed to create one of the most lethal freshmen combinations in the country. The duo combined for 97 goals and is one of four sets of freshmen teammates to earn All-Rookie accolades. |
